Which Side of the Road Do You Drive On?

When there are no lanes, how do you know you are taking a good line or being a responsible athlete who is on the correct side of the lake?

For regular practice, rowing shells from the Aquatic Center should use a clockwise traffic pattern, going up lake/river on the North shore and down lake/river on the South shore. Now apply the thirds rule! Wherever you are, you should divide the lake into thirds using the North and South shorelines as your endpoints. The third closest to shore should be your lane of travel with no one in the middle third unless you need to pass a slower boat. At no time should you go to the opposite third lane during your direction of travel. This is like deciding that the traffic is backed up on your side of the highway, so you decide to use the other side going the opposite direction of everyone else.

Want to really know how well you are doing? Ask Coach DeDe if you can check out one of the training pack GPS speedcoaches.
