Just like it takes many practices to be ready for one race – it takes lots of preparation and teamwork to be ready for your race!
Here are the steps that we took as a team to bring us to a great outcome at Head of the Port.
Step 1
Prep activities included de-rigging, loading the trailer with boats, oars, tables, and other gear. DeDe prepares a diagram based on boat weights, balance considerations and race times. The team loads based on the diagram. We had enough entries for the juniors to fill one trailer, and the masters and Sac State Rowing Club filled a second.
Step 2
Aquatic Center staff drives the trailers to the Port the day before racing occurs. One truck died after delivering its trailer which meant that AC staff had to make two trips to return the trailers. Thanks AC coaches for getting this done.
Step 3
Race Day! Crews joined in to help with all the trailer chores, rigging, and helped each other with launching and recovery. It’s a lot of work, and a lot of fun! We were a busy crew with eights, quads, doubles and singles to race, cheer on and support. It takes the whole team + coaches and staff to make it happen! Thanks to all! And - a huge thankyou to River City Rowing Club for hosting this event.
After the last event, the tired crews then have to de rig the boats, load them and all the gear back on the trailer, prepare for the AC staff to drive them home.
Step 4
The next day, all crews work to unload the boats and gear, put riggers back on. Then a thorough boat washing to remove all the salt water from the port.
Instead of medals, first place winners received beer glasses ( or in Coach DeDe’s case milkshake glass ) and a pin.
